Hakuba Iwatake Snowboard School offers regular group and kids lessons, as well as special custom lessons tailored to the students’ needs. Today, I met a man from Ibaraki (pictured left), who was taking the Basic Park & Ground Tricks Lesson.

Students enrolled in the Basic Park & Ground Tricks Lesson gather in front of SKYARK at 10:00 a.m. and take one run down the South Slope to warm up. Afterwards, they return to the flat area in front of SKYARK, and learn basic skills and ground tricks such as ollies (pictured), nollies, and presses.

The lesson then moves back to the South Slope, where students apply the various tricks they’ve picked up. They can also challenge themselves with spinning techniques such as 180s and 360s. (*The Basic Course is ¥6,000 per person for one 1.5-hour lesson, or ¥10,000 for two lessons totaling 3 hours.) There are also Applied Ground Tricks lessons for upper level skiers and boarders and Applied Park Lessons that take advantage of the terrain park’s elements.

The summit temperature at 8:00 a.m. was and already warm +1.9°C, and the well-packed groomed, granular snow surfaces of the South and East Slopes, as well as the Sunny Valley Course were quickly softening up and turning to spring slush. My edges bit into the snow and my skis slid well, making for comfortable and controlled turns.
