Happo-one REPORT

2023.03.08280cm / Partly Cloudy

The sky was shrouded in haze, the warm sun made things feel very spring-like, and the groomed, granular snow surface of the Riesen Slalom Course was already softening up right from the morning. The preliminary round of competition for the ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships starts tomorrow, 3/9 (Thurs.), and official practice sessions were being held on Usagidaira yesterday and today. This gathering of talent may have inspired other visitors to Happo, as guests unrelated to the competition seemed to be skiing at a high level as well.

The type and quality of the granular snow were similar to yesterday, but the moderately soft surface stretching from the top of Riesen all the way down to the Usuba Slope at the end of Riesen made the slopes easier to ski. I noticed many people making quick laps of the area using the Riesen Quad.

From the top of the ski resort, Mt. Goryu (pictured) and the three peaks of the Hakuba Sanzan could be seen through the hazy spring sky. The groomed Riesen Grat Course (pictured) had a moderately packed, wet snow surface, while the area to the skier’s left side of the steep slope on the second half of the run had a firm, uneven surface marked by tracks.

The southern route of Usagidaira had a soft and moist groomed granular snow surface, while the area along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) and the Skyline Course had moderately firm, coarse, groomed snow. The groomed Kitaone traverse cat track, Sakka Slope, and Shirakaba Slope featured soft, slushy conditions. Tomorrow, on the 1st day of qualifying for the technical competition, multiple disciplines will take place on the Kurobishi and Usagidaira Slopes.
