The 60th edition of the ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships began today under calm, sunny skies! On this, the first day of the qualifying rounds, competition for separate disciplines took place along the Alpen Quad (pictured) and the Kurobishi 3 Pair starting at 9:00 a.m.

Miku Kuriyama (pictured, center), the winner of the last tournament from Niigata Prefecture, smiled and waved to me along the Kurobishi 3 Pair just before the competition kicked off. Conditions were typical of a warm spring morning, with the outermost layer of granular snow covering the firm, medium to large-sized moguls beginning to soften up.

I spoke with Yuto Murakami (pictured), a member of Sendai University’s Team Nishiki-goi, who told me, “Thank you very much for taking pictures of me at the National Student Ski Tournament at Iwatake in February! My theme for this season is ‘excitement.’ Last year, I was pretty tense during the competition, so this time I want to have fun and enjoy skiing without being overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the tournament.”

Due to a last-minute change made yesterday evening, the events of the first and second qualifying days were switched around, to the disciplines originally scheduled for today will be held tomorrow, 3/10 (金), on Kurobishi (pictured, left) and Usagidaira. The groomed areas along the Kurobishi 2 Quad, the southern route of Usagidaira, and the Riesen Slalom Course, and a loose layer of soft surface snow right from the beginning of the day.
