Sugadaira REPORT

2023.03.1080cm / Rain to Sun

Heavy rain was falling early this morning. As I got to the Oku-Davos parking lot (D-1), there were no other cars arriving, so I changed plans and made my way to the Ura Taro parking lot (T-1), at the entrance to Sugadaira. Fortunately, the rain began to weaken around 8:15 and stopped completely around 8:25, it wasn’t long before we were greeted with clear blue skies (pictured).

Due to the poor early weather on a weekday morning, turnout was slow overall, but Ura Taro Family still proved to be quite popular. A few people started showing up around 8:40, and at that time the Ura Taro Family East and West courses had firm bases with loose surfaces. My skis slid well, and I was able to enjoy some nice turns.

I spoke with some students from Kanagawa and Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “We are staying in Sugadaira for two nights and skiing. Thank goodness it stopped raining, and the conditions are good again today!” The Schi Heil Course also had a loose outer layer of granular snow, but my edges gripped the surface well, and the conditions were good for skiing.

With the recent string of sunny weather, warm days, and today’s rain, I was concerned about melting snow, but luckily I didn’t observe any exposed dirt or bushes on the groomed trails in the Ura Taro and Omote Davos areas. In other news, from 3/18 (Sat.) to 3/19 (Sun.), the “11th Smile Cup” will be held. This alpine race and test-ride event is open to all snowboarders across various genres: including pros, amateurs, kids, alpine, soft boots, etc…!
