In typical Snownavi fashion, “ladies first” is where we’ll start our report on the final day of the Ski Technical championships (lol). The top finisher in qualifying and the finals, Yui Sonohara (pictured) from Shiga Kogen in Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture, was the top contender going into the super finals! After I took this picture, she told me that she was going to practice on Riesen Grat before the third super final discipline started, and then headed to board the lift.

It was very warm again today, and the slopes all had a loose layer of granular snow from the start of the day. Nagisa Watanabe (pictured foreground, from Niigata) qualified in 8th place overall after finishing a disappointing 128th in one of the disciplines, but in the final, she scored high in all four events, finishing 3rd, 1st, 1st, and 2nd, putting her in 2nd overall, only 3 points behind first place Sonohara. She told me, “I’m not nervous. I just want to ski my own style.” (*This photo shows the 8:00 a.m. course inspection.)

Yuki Kawakami (pictured, from Gunma), a high school student who will graduate this spring, maintained his place in third overall with a high score of 280 points in the “Long Turn (Steep Slope / Hard-pack)” final. He confided, “I was a little worried because of a knee injury, but I was able to make it to the Super Final. I will do my best to advance to the Winning Match as well!”

Ryu Takeda (pictured, from Hokkaido), a three-time consecutive champion of the event, told me, “I came out on top in yesterday’s final, so I would like to maintain the same level of performance as I ski the four events of the Super Final. I also want to show everyone the level I am capable of skiing at in the winning match.” Who will be crowned the 60th champion? The Winning Match will be held as soon as the Super Final has finished!
